He was the first African American player to be a star. From 1956 to 1969, Bill Russell played for the Boston Celtics and won 11 NBA titles.
As a five-time MVP, and 12-time All Star in the NBA, Russell was the NBA’s first black star. Russell was also the leader of the gold-medal winning basketball team for the United States in 1956 Summer Olympics.
Bill faced prejudice despite his achievements. Russell was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as well as the National Collegiate Hall of Fame because of his outstanding contributions to the NBA.
Early Years Of Bill
Bill Russell was the son of Charles and Katie Russell. He was born in Monroe in Louisiana on December 12, 1934. Russell was eight when his family moved to Oakland, California. They lived in several public housing buildings. His mother also died shortly after.
As a child, Russell attended McClymonds High School. He won two consecutive state basketball championships his junior and senior year. Russell was offered a scholarship by the University of San Francisco.
He was the center of a USF team that rose to prominence in college basketball. They won the NCAA championships 1956 and 1955. Russell competed in track, and field at USF. His greatest strength was in the high jump. He was ranked seventh in the world in 1956.
Profession of Bill
Red Auerbach, the Celtics’ coach, had already retired before the 1966-67 season. Russell was appointed the new head coach of the team, becoming the NBA’s first black coach.
Russell would suffer his first defeat in the next season, when the Celtics were beaten by the Philadelphia Eagles and Wilt Chamberlain. In his final season, Russell was back to winning as a player.
The Celtics started the Eastern Division Finals against the 76ers down 3-1. However, the squad came back to win three more games with a remarkable come-from-behind performance. Russell won his tenth championship when the Celtics beat the Lakers in the NBA Finals.
Private Life of Bill
In 1956, Russell married Rose Swisher. Rose was his college love. Their three children were Karen, William Jr. and Jacob. The couple split in 1973.
In 1977, Bill Russell married Dorothy Anstett, former Miss USA. They divorced in 1980. Russell married Marilyn Nault, and they remained together until Marilyn’s death in 2009.
