Karen, a Costco employee, had a fit about the company’s face mask policy, as evidenced by a video posted on Twitter
Costco Karen : When requested to wear a mask, one Costco shopper refused.
During the coronavirus outbreak, an unidentified Costco client went viral for refusing to wear a face mask inside the store.
While a face mask dangled from her ear, the shopper fought with an employee about the policy, wanted to speak with her manager, and sat in the midst of the warehouse club.
“New ‘Costco Karen’ Sighting,” a Twitter user quipped on Thursday, posting now-viral video footage of the irate shopper’s outburst, which has been viewed over 51,000 times.
Karen is a derogatory word for a demanding, middle-aged white lady who exhibits an excessive feeling of entitlement in different cultural disputes.
SENIOR SHOPPING HOURS AT COSTCO WILL BE REDUCED TO TWICE A WEEK.
When a Costco staff asked the woman if she had a medical reason for not wearing a mask at the Merchandise Returns counter, the camera started rolling.
“I am a United States citizen!” exclaimed the client, who claimed she had no medical justification for refusing to wear a mask.
“OK, but you’ll have to wear your mask in Costco. The employee said, “It’s a private property.”
“Right now, there’s something hanging off your ear,” she added, referring to the mask dangling from one of the shopper’s ears.
“No! “I am not a Costco member,” the woman retorted. The customer then requested to speak with the employee’s boss.
“He’ll expect the same from you. I’ll have him meet you outside if you want to go outside,” the Costco employee added.
The woman said, “No, I’m staying right here.”
“You must do so; it is our policy.” The employee persisted on walking outside, wheeling a cart and walking to a new location.
After trailing for a few moments, the shopper sat down in the middle of the store and refused to move.
After declining the employee’s offers of a chair or another seat, the woman agreed to move to the side – and sit down – away from other customers and their shopping carts.
A manager and another staff are then seen approaching her in a second camera clip.
“I am a citizen of the United States of America. During their conversation, the woman, who was seated on the ground, exclaimed, “I have constitutional rights!”
According to the Daily Mail, the event occurred at a Costco in Hillsboro, Oregon.
The shopper’s actions and reluctance to wear a face mask inside the warehouse club drew criticism from social media critics.
All Costco members and guests must wear a face mask that covers their mouth and nose at all times within the store, according to the superstore’s COVID-19 updates website.
Children under the age of two are exempt, as is anyone who cannot wear a face mask owing to a medical condition.
The face-covering mandate regulation, however, stipulates that “the use of a facial covering should not be considered as a substitute for social separation.”
“While on Costco property, please continue to follow the regulations regarding acceptable distancing.”
