Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story begins with Dahmer’s capture. Police removed frozen body parts, skeletal remains, and polaroid photos from his apartment. After his attempted murder arrest, Dahmer’s secrets were revealed.
As police removed evidence from his apartment, news crews broadcast the images nationwide. Dahmer was convicted of murdering 17 young men and boys between 1978 and 1991.
Numerous books, films, and documentaries detail Dahmer’s gruesome murder spree. Some chose to dig deeper, wondering how a timid boy became one of history’s most notorious killers.

Who is David Dahmer
Dahmer was born in Milwaukee in 1960. He was the first of Lionel Herbert Dahmer and Joyce Annette’s two sons.
Dahmer was isolated from his parents, who had marital problems, during his early years.
Lionel was a student when his son was young and was rarely home. Joyce, a hypochondriac, suffered from depression and attempted suicide. Lione’s book on his son discusses how neither parent could devote much time to Dahmer, who often recalled their loud arguments.
Dahmer, a happy and energetic child, became quiet and shy after double hernia surgery before his fourth birthday. A teacher noticed he was showing abandonment symptoms, which were exacerbated by his mother’s illness during her second pregnancy.
Joyce had her second son in Doylestown, Ohio, in 1966.
Dahmer named his baby brother David Dahmer. Lionel became an analytical chemist that year, exposing the impressionable boy to bone preservation.
Dahmer learned how to clean and preserve skulls and body parts by observing his father. Dahmer became a problem child and a class clown around this time. He realised he was gay and briefly dated a classmate non-sexually.
Lionel divorced Joyce in 1977 after learning she had a brief affair. Jeffrey and David Dahmer were given a choice of where to live after their parents’ amicable divorce. Joyce moved to Wisconsin with David Dahmer in 1978. 18-year-old Dahmer stayed at home.
The Thirteen-Year Murder Spree
Steven Hicks, 18, was Dahmer’s first victim. The killer took Hicks to his parents’ home, where he strangled and dismembered him. Dahmer told Inside Edition:
“It was wrong. The first killing was unplanned, […] I’d fantasised about picking up a hitchhiker, bringing him home, and dominating and controlling him.”
Moreover, “No. Over a decade, no one knew what was happening. Dahmer killed again nine years later.
After killing Steve Tuomi, Dahmer sought out young men to kill. Dahmer’s meticulousness in dismembering and preserving his victims’ corpses is a hallmark of his murders. Dahmer first kept a victim’s head in a jar in 1989.
Dahmer’s Arrest and Trial
Tracy Edwards posted nude photos at Dahmer’s apartment in July 1991. Edwards escaped after punching Dahmer in the face and ran away. Two police officers told Edwards a “freak” handcuffed and tried to kill him.
Officers escorted Edwards to Dahmer’s apartment, where they saw polaroids depicting dismemberment. An officer said, “These are real,” after seeing the polaroids.
In the apartment, authorities found severed heads in the kitchen, two human hearts in the fridge, seven skulls in the bedroom, and a torso in the freezer. It was more like dismantling a museum than a crime scene, the CMO said.
Dahmer reluctantly cooperated with police after resisting arrest. “I should be dead,” he said.
Dahmer admitted to 15 murders while insane. 1992: Dahmer received 15 life sentences.
His life sentence in Ohio was for murder. A fellow inmate killed Dahmer in 1994.
Family Responses
Lionel Dahmer published A Father’s Story after his son’s death. He blamed Joyce’s excessive drug use during pregnancy for Dahmer’s negative brain development.
He also discussed his complicated feelings for his son, blaming himself for neglect and inability to meet his emotional needs. Lionel and his second wife visited Dahmer in prison.
David Dahmer has never spoken publicly about Jeffrey. David changed his name to avoid his brother’s actions and legacy.
Nobody knows what happened to David, what he became, or if he’s still alive. Dahmer detested David, believing he got the love and attention he craved. David moved in with their mother after the Dahmers’ divorce, so the brothers likely lost touch.
Where is David Dahmer now?
Shari Dahmer told Larry King that David was pregnant during the interview (2004). Shari said David has a career and family. David Dahmer’s whereabouts are unknown.
