On Tuesday, Barrack, who chaired Trump’s inaugural committee in 2017, was detained and charged with acting as an agent of the United Arab Emirates between April 2016 and April 2018.

Two more defendants were included in the seven-count indictment: Matthew Grimes and Rashid Al Malik, a UAE citizen who is still at large.

During a June 2019 interview with federal law enforcement officers, Barrack is also accused of obstructing justice and making repeated false statements.

“As alleged, the defendants conspired to illegally advance and promote the interests of the United Arab Emirates in this country, using their positions of power and influence in a presidential election year, in flagrant violation of their obligation to notify the Attorney General of their activities and in derogation of the American people’s right to know when a foreign government.

According to his attorney, Matt Herrington, Barrack, the founder of Colony Capital and a longtime friend of Trump, would defend the charges.

“From the beginning, Tom Barrack made himself voluntarily available to investigators.

He is innocent and will enter a not guilty plea today “Herrington stated his opinion.

Barrack appeared in federal court in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon, when he was arrested, and was ordered detained until a detention hearing on July 26.

Because the case is being prosecuted in the Eastern District of New York, the government is attempting to bring him to the East Coast.

Acting Assistant Attorney General Mark Lesko said, “The behaviour charged in the indictment is nothing short of a betrayal of those leaders in the United States, including the former president.”

According to prosecutors, during a White House meeting between officials from the two countries, Barrack went so far as to provide UAE government officials with sensitive information concerning the thoughts and reactions of senior US government officials.
