Officials Say 4 Dead from Indiana Mall Shooting
According to greenwood park mall city authorities, three people were killed in a shooting at Greenwood mall on Sunday. The gunman was fatally shot by an armed man.
The shooting left two other people hospitalized. It began at 6 p.m. Eastern Time when a man with several magazines of ammunition and a rifle entered the mall’s food court. He then started firing. Chief Jim Ison, Greenwood Police Department, said that the gunman was carrying a firearm and several magazines. Authorities did not provide any details about the motive or identify the gunman.
Chief Ison stated that the injured included a 12-year-old girl with a minor injury to her back and another person in stable condition.
Late Sunday, Mayor Mark Myers stated that there was no threat to the public and that the Police Department was taking control of the situation. He asked for the public to avoid the area.
Four people were shot in separate shootings at a vigil at a park in Beech Grove (Ind.), nine miles north-east of Greenwood, hours after the shooting at the mall. One of the victims was killed in the incident.
Chief Ison addressed the Greenwood shooting at Sunday’s news conference. He stated that local emergency calls began to be received about the shooting around 6:45 p.m. Chief Ison stated that the threat was ended when an armed pedestrian, with a handgun, stopped the gunman. He said, “It appears that an armed good Samaritan observed the shooting and shot the shooter.”
Mr Ison only identified the passer-by as a 22-year-old male from Bartholomew County. This is approximately 35 miles south of the mall. He also stated that he was legally carrying a gun. The man was praised by Mr Myers in a statement.
Mr Myers stated that “someone we call the ‘good Samaritan” was able to stop further bloodshed and shoot the assailant.” “I am grateful to his quick action in this situation and his heroism.”
Chief Ison stated that the police and other personnel would not investigate the crime scene at the mall until the state bomb squad could assess whether the backpack found in the mall’s bathroom was dangerous. He stated that they had found no explosive devices and had cleared the backpack late Sunday.
On Facebook, the police stated that they were looking for witnesses to the shooting which occurred about 10 miles south of downtown Indianapolis.
On Twitter, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department stated that it was supporting local authorities.
At 9:30 Eastern Time, the shooting occurred in Beech Grove. This is a small city with approximately 15,000 residents. According to authorities, one person was killed and three others were stable as of Monday morning.
Dennis Buckley, Beech Grove mayor, stated that the shooting occurred during a Don Challis Park vigil. Officials said that some emergency responders from Beech Grove were present in Greenwood at the time to assist with the shooting at the mall.
“We are a great city,” said Mr Buckley. “But sometimes evil comes to us so we must regroup and keep moving forward.”
Police released the names and suspects of the victims in the shooting at Greenwood Park Mall on Sunday night.
At 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, first responders from many Johnson and Marion county agencies responded quickly to a call about a shooting at Greenwood Park Mall. Just before the closing of the mall, the shooting took place.
The shooting left four people dead, with the shooter and two other victims. On Monday, Victor Gomez (aged 30), Pedro Pineda and Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda (56 and 37 respectively) were all identified as the victims.
Jonathan Douglas Superman (20), of Greenwood, is the shooting suspect. He graduated from Greenwood High School. Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison stated Monday that he had a juvenile criminal record but not an adult criminal history.
He said that his past incidents with Greenwood Police Department included minor offences such as a fight at school or being a juvenile runaway.
Officials said it was not known if he was taking drugs or alcohol, or if there were mental health issues.
Elisha Dicken (22 years old), of Seymour, shot the shooter. Police call him a good Samaritan. Dicken was with his girlfriend shopping in the mall when the shooting took place. Ison stated that he was legally carrying a handgun but that the mall prohibits such carry.
Ison stated that he was legally carrying under the constitutional carry laws.
According to police, the shooter probably entered the mall carrying a SigSauer Model 400M 5.56 rifle that had been broken up and kept in a bag left at the mall’s bathroom. Ison stated that two other weapons were also discovered by police: a Smith and Wesson M&P-15 5.56 rifle and a Glock33.357 handgun.
The shooting was restricted to the SigSauer rifle. Ison stated that all three guns were legally bought within the past two years.
Based on product descriptions, both the Model 400M (and the M&P) are semi-automatic rifles in AR-15 style.
He had over 100 rounds of ammunition and multiple magazines. Ison stated that he had been to gun ranges several times in the past few years.
Police identify the victims of the shooting at Greenwood Park Mall by a shooter
Police released an official timeline that shows the shooter entered the mall through an entrance near the food courts at 4:54 pm. He was captured on surveillance video entering the mall carrying a bag. Officers believe he had his weapons stored in the bag. Ison stated that the shooter immediately went to the nearby bathrooms and stayed there for an hour and two minutes.
It is possible that he was prepping for the shooting at this point. Police found a cell phone inside a bathroom toilet. He claimed that the shooter had placed it there before opening fire.
The shooter then exits the toilet about an hour later and opens fire on Gomez. Ison stated that he then pointed his rifle at the food court and shot Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda and Pedro Pineda.
The 22-year-old woman was then struck by his second round of fire at the food court. Ison stated that the woman is currently in recovery from a leg injury at Indianapolis’ Eskenazi Hospital.
It is believed that a bullet fragment struck a wall and struck a 12-year-old girl who fled the gunfire. He said that she was treated at an Indianapolis hospital for the injury and doctors removed the bullet fragment.
Dicken, an armed civilian, confronted Superman. Dicken opened fire on Sapirman several times and he attempted to flee to the toilets. Ison stated that he was shot and fell on the ground.
He said, “Once he arrived out and began shooting, it was only two minutes until he was neutralized”
Editor’s Note: Tuesday afternoon, Ison clarified Monday’s comments and stated that it took 15 seconds from the time shooter fired to when he was shot down. It was not two minutes.
Dicken shot 10 rounds and the shooter shot 24 rounds. Ison stated that there were many people in the mall during the shooting.
Police believe that Dicken had no military or police training and was skilled with the handgun. He engaged the gunman at a distance.
Ison stated, “I will admit that his actions were nothing less than heroic.”
Dicken told mall security about his actions and stayed for a conversation with law enforcement. Ison stated that Dicken was taken into custody, his firearm was confiscated and was then interviewed by detectives to confirm his story.
Ison answered reporters’ questions about whether it was beneficial to have good citizens like Dicken out there to stop future shooters.
He said that “Many more people would’ve died last night if it wasn’t for a responsible, armed citizen who took immediate action within the first two minutes after the shooting.”
Police have yet to find evidence that Sapirman was involved in the Greenwood Park Mall shooting and they don’t believe he knew any of the victims. Ison stated that there is no evidence to suggest that the shooting was motivated by racial discrimination. The victims were Hispanic.
Law enforcement also has not discovered any evidence that the shooter left a message or a note on his cell phone. Ison stated that the FBI’s Forensic Team is currently holding the phone in custody and is trying to extract information from it.
“Right now we don’t have any motive. His family members, whom we spoke to, were as shocked as anyone else. Ison stated that they did not see any signs that he was violently or mentally unstable.
Police and federal law enforcement raided the apartment of the shooter at Polo Run Apartments at 800 Kings Mill Road in Greenwood. He was living alone. Ison stated that a SWAT team was called to search the apartment. During the search officers discovered the oven in the apartment, which had been turned on by the shooter’s laptop, and also a can filled with butane.
When the bomb squad was alerted, a bomb squad was dispatched to clear the scene.
He said, “I don’t want to speculate about his intentions. It could have been to cause a fire and to damage the laptop.”
The FBI stated Monday that they were providing assistance to Greenwood police in a search. The FBI has taken the laptop of the shooter into custody and will send it to Quantico, Virginia, for analysis. Ison stated that the heat caused damage to the laptop.
The FBI Indianapolis Special Agent In Charge Herb Stapleton said Monday that it will take some time for the agencies to examine the phone and laptop. He said that there is no guarantee data from the phone can be recovered and that analysts will need to examine the laptop to determine what technical possibilities they have.
Reporters were told by him that it was too soon to determine if the shooter was a particular profile. The FBI is open to shootings with diverse backgrounds in situations like this.
Stapleton stated, “We don’t want to be too narrow-sighted focused on one profile.”
Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers stated that Sunday was extremely difficult and that he would not be able speak on Monday about anything else that had been said in other areas affected by mass shootings.
He said, “I don’t want to be one of the mayors that has to share these statements but unfortunately I am.” “I am deeply grieving for these senseless killings and for the scars left on the victims and our community.”
Myers stated that both federal and state officials have reached out to the city. The White House even sent messages of condolences and support to the city, as well as offering assistance for any other needs.
Myers stated, “I thank all those who did that and who reached out to us as well as our reaching out for support to our people.” “We are also very grateful for the 22-year-old young man who stopped this violence.
Ezra Hill of Greenwood City Council, whose district contains the mall, said Monday that he was shocked that such an incident occurred in Greenwood. Hill said that he sends his thoughts and prayers to the victims and all those involved in public safety.
Hill stated that it was difficult because there are many people who are grieving and the community is still in shock. “We just need to pull together and support each other so that we can move forward,” Hill said.
Myers said that he was proud to be a part of the city’s first response team, which included those from nearby cities as well as state and federal authorities.
First responders have to cope with the trauma of responding to mass shootings. Ison stated that officers have been trained for mass shootings in the past and that this moment was very similar.
Ison stated, “I have been in many of these training scenarios and they were staged to look like real incidents.” “It looked exactly like every other incident that we had staged, so it was surreal for me to walk in there last night.”
First responders are doing well. They will be able to meet with a team of mental health professionals this week. Ison explained that the team includes mental health professionals, law enforcement officers, and individuals who have been specifically trained to deal with trauma events first responders face.
Police have asked the public for their assistance in returning personal property left at the mall after the shooting. Ison stated that these items include shopping bags and cell phones, as well as wallets.
Anybody who has lost a personal item is asked to visit the Greenwood Police Department Training Center at 736 Lowes Boulevard between 9 and 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Officers will be available to help people get their property back. Ison stated that anyone who comes to retrieve property should bring identification to enable officers to positively identify the person giving it to.
Simon Property Group closed down the mall Monday. As of Monday afternoon, it is unclear if the mall will reopen Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Correction: July 20, 2022, 10:00 a.m.
An earlier version of this story misrepresented the calibre of the weapons used by the shooter. The rifles were 5.56 and not.556, while the Glock handgun measured.357 and not.337.
