The scars on Monkey D. Luffy’s body are a part of his personality, but where did they come from? Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of One Piece, is best known for his signature straw hat, but he also has scars that stick out.
Luffy has two scars: one beneath his left eye, which he cut himself with a knife to prove his bravery to Shanks and his crew when he was a youngster, and another beneath his right eye, which he cut himself with a knife to display his courage to Shanks and his crew when he was a child.
This is something the anime skipped over because of the “violent subject matter,” but it’s the first thing the spectator sees following Gold Roger’s famous challenge to the world to find the One Piece during his execution in the manga.
How cruel did Luffy get his mark?
His second scar is a big “x” shape scorched across Luffy’s chest. He earned this scar during the Marineford Arc, but it isn’t apparent until after the time skip. The shock of seeing his brother Ace during the Paramount War was too much for Luffy, and he surrendered himself to perish at the hands of Admiral Akainu.
On the other hand, his comrades rushed in to protect Straw Hat, the fisherman, and Knight of the Sea, Jimbei, in particular. While fleeing the unrelenting Akainu and burning everything in his path with his molten devil fruit powers, Jimbei carried Luffy’s unconscious body away from the battlefield of Marineford.
Jimbei leapt into Marineford’s harbour, but Akainu managed to catch up with him. The admiral used his magma fist to breach Jimbei’s chest and reach the unconscious Luffy in Jimbei’s arms during the fall.
Jimbei was clearly in excruciating pain, and the magma strike left a profound imprint on the unconscious rubber man that would later become his “x” scar.
Jimbei and Luffy would not have lived if it hadn’t been for Crocodile, Buggy, and the remaining Whitebeard Pirates. Two of them were able to recover thanks to Trafalgar Law and his crew’s unexpected entrance.
Surprisingly, Luffy received a similar “x” scar across his chest during one of the anime’s filler arcs. This occurred during the Ocean’s Dream Arc, when all of the crew members, except Robin, awoke with no memories, and it was up to the mystery newest member of the team to assist them piece together the puzzle and reclaim their memories.
The storey is based on One Piece: Ocean’s Dream, a PlayStation game released in 2003. Luffy and a hypnotic Zoro fight during this arc, and as a result, he gets a “x” scar over his chest from a wound caused by Zoro.
Of course, this isn’t the genuine reason of Luffy’s scar because it was only filler. Given that the anime was the first to use the “x” scar, it’s probable that this segment inspired Oda to create Luffy’s latest badge of war.
Scars are fantastic character details since they convey a tale about a person’s physique. And Luffy is no exception. His eye scar demonstrates his determination to become a great pirate worthy of Shanks’ admiration.
And the scar on his chest symbolises his ability to bring people together. Luffy had just met Jimbei and the Whitebeard Pirates on the day of his brother’s death, but by the end of it, they were putting their lives on the line to save him.
During the conflict, Dracula Mihawk makes the following observation: “It’s not a Devil Fruit or a gimmick… He transforms the people around him one by one into his allies…that man wields the most terrible power.” A scar may reveal a lot about a person, and Luffy’s scars reveal that he’s a formidable opponent.
