Jake Paul, a social media star who became a boxer, hoped that his eight-round split-decision win over Tyron Woodley would make him a legitimate fighter in the sport.
After Jake Paul almost landed a blow to Tyron’s face by boxing on Sunday, Paul made a snide comment at his opponent, and then pretending to lick his gloves. His orange trunks had an electronic screen that projected his name close to his waist. The orange mitts were coordinated.
His name was what brought him to this place.
- The bout was decided by two judges in Paul’s favor. This gave Paul a split-decision win. After that, the two men kept the prefight chirping. Woodley asked for a rematch. Paul replied that he would only consider it if Woodley had a tattoo saying, “I Love Jake Paul.” This was a wager they made in July. Woodley stated that he would most likely place the tattoo on his thigh in a postfight news conference.
- Traditional boxing contests are not known for their gimmicks, trunk billboards or bets. Paul isn’t normal and doesn’t want to be considered traditional. Paul declared that he will continue to challenge the norms of combat sport and won a fight against an opponent considered legitimately dangerous.
One of these norms is that fighters are fighters first, and celebrities second.
- Paul, 24, stated that he believes he is one of the faces in boxing because he does it differently. There’s plenty of food for everyone. I don’t want everything. There are hundreds of incredible fighters in this sport. All I want is to bring more attention from a new audience.”
- Paul defeated Woodley, a former champion welterweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in an eight-round matchup at a 190-pound catchweight. This was the first of a series of fights Paul signed with Showtime.
- Both men came from different backgrounds to the ring. Paul became a YouTube prankster, and a Disney Channel actor. In 2018, he started boxing and defeated his first three opponents including Nate Robinson (a retired N.B.A.). Ben Askren, a retired mixed-martial artist, was his opponent by knockout.
- Woodley, 39, made his professional debut in boxing after he left the U.F.C. (the largest mixed martial arts organisation), when his contract expired this spring. At the time, he was on a losing streak of four fights.
- The fight sold 16,000 tickets. This was just a little over 4,000 less than the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse capacity in Cleveland, Paul’s hometown. It was all the rage on social media. Paul was stunned to learn that LeBron James (the Los Angeles Lakers star and Ohio native) had posted about the fight via Twitter. He fought back tears when he learned.
Paul stated, “No one is doing” (and I say it as humblely as possible) that no one is doing four fights as big as Paul.
- Paul watched Logan Mayweather, his older brother, fight Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition match in Miami. There were no judges so there was no winner. Logan Paul,
- however, managed to survive eight rounds with Mayweather, a 44-year-old boxer who had a 50-0 record. The bout, like Jake Paul’s, ushered in a new era of combat sports, which combines entertainment, celebrity, and spectacle.
- Jake Paul’s previous opponents were not credible as strikers which made the matchup against Woodley exciting. Both fighters had their moments, but both landed clean shots.
- Both fighters also showed their inexperience and lack of skill compared to elite, seasoned boxers. Paul was sometimes too quick to swing, while Woodley was too cautious to attack.
- Paul believes he has earned respect and can now be taken seriously by purists, as he won the fight against an ex-U.F.C. fighter. champion. He will have many options for his next opponent.
- Conor McGregor is as curious as a legitimate U.F.C. fighter. Shortly after Paul’s fight, Conor McGregor posted the following tweet: “Salivating.”
- Woodley would regret if he did not get a rematch. Woodley said that he believes he won and would love to fight Jake Paul again to clear up any doubts about the split decision.
He liked the hype. He described the promotion of the event as a movie and stated that it was his biggest career achievement.
- Woodley stated, “I have never been part of anything similar to this and to even participate in another fight of this magnitude would feel strange.”
- Stephen Espinoza was the Showtime Sports president. He stated in an interview that Showtime had accepted the new style of boxing and did not apologize for it.
- Critics pointed out other bouts around the main event, like Amanda Serrano’s unanimous victory against Yamileth Merado as evidence that high-level fights are possible alongside fan favourite matchups.
- Espinoza stated that “we just see it as an interesting evolution in the sport and something which can live side by side with the core business.” “This isn’t a zero-sum sport.”
- Paul stated that he wasn’t sure what he would do next because of his training and constant activity. He also said that he had been missing vacations and dentist appointments due to his training. He expects the same circus to be there, even if it is a larger one, no matter what he does.
- He said, “The media and my fans and haters are holding me to a very high standard due to the fact that I have a loudmouth.” I like that. This is what makes me stronger. This is what makes these fights more important.”
