Jerry Sheindlin is an American judge, author, and television personality best known for his appearances on The People’s Court, Entertainment Tonight and Biography. Additionally, he is best known as being married to Judy Sheindlin of Judge Judy fame.
Early Life and Education
Jerry Sheindlin was born November 19th 1933 in New York City. After serving in the Army during Korea War he continued his education at Long Island University and Brooklyn Law School completing both undergraduate degrees (a bachelors) in 1959 as well as his legal studies (law degree in 1959).
Career as Lawyer and Judge
Jerry Sheindlin began his legal career specializing in criminal cases. As part of Adlerberg & Sheindlin he handled many high-profile trials. In 1980 he was appointed U.S. administrative law judge; 1983 saw his appointment to criminal court judgeship; finally in 1986 he became trial judge of New York Supreme Court.
Jerry Sheindlin has written two legal-themed books: Genetic Fingerprinting: The Law and Science of DNA Evidence and Blood Trail.
Career as a TV Arbitrator
Jerry Sheindlin followed in the footsteps of his wife by becoming a television arbitrator in 1999, replacing former New York City Mayor Ed Koch as the judge on The People’s Court, an extremely popular reality court show. Known for his soft-spoken, humorous style of justice delivery.
His tenure on The People’s Court was, unfortunately, brief. After two seasons he left after being replaced by Marilyn Milian and eventually appeared on other shows such as Entertainment Tonight and Biography.
Personal Life and Family
Jerry Sheindlin met his future wife Judy Sheindlin for the first time at a bar in 1977 after both were divorced from their previous marriages and had children from those unions. They eventually wed that year and went on to have two additional children together.
But their marriage hit a rough patch in 1990 and they eventually divorced. Recognizing their mistake, however, they reconciled later that same year and have been together ever since.
Jerry Sheindlin has three children from his first marriage: Gregory, Jonathan and Nicole. Additionally he has two stepchildren from Judy’s first marriage: Jamie Levy and Adam Levy – giving him grandchildren altogether!
