Kirstie Alley was born in Wichita, Kansas, to Robert Deal Alley and Lillian Alley, who operated a timber company.

Colette and Craig are her two siblings. Alley graduated from Wichita Southeast High School in 1969. She attended Kansas State University for two years before dropping out after her sophomore year.

Alley appeared on the game programme Match Game in 1979 after moving to Los Angeles to pursue Scientology and work as an interior designer. She came out on top in both rounds, taking home $500 in the first round and $5500 in the second.

In 1980, she was featured on the game programme Password Plus. She described herself as an interior designer on both shows. Her mother was killed and her father was critically injured in an automobile accident involving a drunk driver in 1981.

Kirstie Alley Career

Alley made her cinematic debut in 1982 in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, playing Lieutenant Saavik, a Vulcan Starfleet officer, but declined to reprise the part in the subsequent two sequels, subsequently claiming she was offered less money than she received for Star Trek II.

She starred in several smaller films in the years after, including One More Chance, Blind Date, and Runaway. She starred as Virgilia Hazard in the ABC miniseries North and South, books I and II, in 1985.

Alley co-starred in the comedy picture Summer School with Mark Harmon in 1987. The picture was a box office hit in the United States, grossing more than $35 million.

She joined the cast of the NBC sitcom Cheers later that year, replacing Shelley Long, and stayed with the show until its eleventh and final season. Alley co-starred in Look Who’s Talking alongside John Travolta in 1989.

The picture was a worldwide success, grossing more than 295 million dollars. They made two more films: Look Who’s Talking Too and Look Who’s Talking Now!, both based on the same idea.

Alley was named a Dancing with the Stars candidate in February 2011. Maksim Chmerkovskiy was her partner on the show. Their first dance, a cha-cha-cha, got them the second-best score, with 23 out of a potential 30 points.

Alley and Chmerkovskiy received a perfect 30 out of 30 for their last dance, which was likewise a cha-cha-cha. Alley finished second in the tournament, trailing NFL Super Bowl winner Hines Ward.

Private life

From 1970 to 1977, Alley was married to her high school boyfriend, Bob Alley, who shared her father’s name.

On December 22, 1983, Alley married actor Parker Stevenson.

After a loss, the couple adopted son William one week after his birth on October 5, 1992, and daughter Lillie in 1995. The couple divorced in 1997. Alley became a grandma in 2016 after her son William had his first child.

Alley had a 21-bedroom summer house in Islesboro, Maine, called the Mitchell Cottage, previously the Islesboro Inn, from 1991 to 2020.

Alley revealed on The Dr Oz Show on September 17, 2012, that she began gaining weight in late 2003 and that she had been a compulsive eater her entire life without gaining weight, recognising the shift only when she entered early menopause in 1992.

Alley shed 75 pounds (34 kg) while serving as a Jenny Craig spokeswoman from 2004 to 2007, lowering her weight to 145 pounds (66 kg).

She told People magazine in May 2009 that after leaving Jenny Craig, she gained 83 pounds (38 kg) and weighed up to 228 pounds (103 kg).

Alley responded in March 2010 after gossip blogger Roger Friedman claimed there was a relationship between her Organic Liaison weight-loss technique and Scientology: “Please look up Mr Roger Friedman on the internet.

He’s spreading false information about my new company and me. You’ll learn about his background and why Fox fired him. Mr Attorney is going to phone Mr Friedman’s attorney tomorrow… With my company, Mr Friedman is treading on thin LIBELOUS ice.”

Alley revealed in September 2011 that she had dropped 100 pounds (45 kg) using Organic Liaison weight reduction products, which she had founded in 2010.

Her weight loss was attributed to exercise, including preparing for the TV show Dancing With the Stars, rather than Organic Liaison products, according to a class-action lawsuit filed in 2012.

In 2013, she agreed to pay a $130,000 settlement in exchange for removing the word “Proven Products” from packaging, posting a disclaimer on the brand’s website stating that it is a “calorie-based weight-loss product,” and removing the name “Proven Products” from packaging.

She resurfaced as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig in April 2014, after Jenny Craig’s parent business bought the Organic Liaison product brand, which was then integrated into Jenny Craig’s product range.

Alley started in January 2015 that she had lost 50 pounds since resuming the Jenny Craig weight-loss programme (23 kg).

Scientology

Alley grew up as a Methodist, but in 1979 he joined the Church of Scientology. Alley claimed to have a cocaine addiction when she became a Scientologist and went through Narconon, a Scientology-affiliated drug treatment program, to get her addiction under control.

She has continued her Scientology training and has earned the rank of OT VII as of 2007. (Operating Thetan Level 7).

She paid $1.5 million for a 5,200 square foot (480 square metres) beachfront mansion from former Scientologist Lisa Marie Presley in May 2000. The villa is located in Clearwater, Florida, which serves as the Church of Scientology’s spiritual headquarters. In 2007, Alley gave the Church $5 million.

Politics

Alley tweeted in August 2015 that she would not be supporting Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016, and on April 8, 2016, she tweeted her support for Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani.

“I loathe this race, and I’m officially no longer endorsing either candidate,” Alley tweeted on October 8, 2016, retracting her endorsement of Trump.

She declared in October 2020 that she voted for Trump in 2016 and planned to do so again in 2020 because “he is NOT a politician.”

She also endorsed John James for the US Senate election in Michigan in 2020.

Alley backed the rioters that attacked the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, during the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol. She stated that “war stinks,” but it was sometimes necessary and that people should return home because they were in danger.
