Kwame Onwuachi, then 21, wanted to start his own catering business. To raise funds for the venture, he sold candy in the subway. The business was profitable and brisk, but then a turf-related dispute nearly turned into a fight. “Yeah. Once I realized that there was a whole organization within this subway candy-selling rings, I was like, “All right, did all I needed to, I’m outta here.”
How operating above ground at the David Geffen Hall?
He’s now operating above ground at the David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center. His new restaurant Tatiana will open in time for the New York Philharmonic’s inaugural season at the newly renovated theatre.
“It’s dope. “I used to take the train from West 66th to walk around the city with my candy box after I was done,” Mr Onwuachi stated about the new job in the Uptown area. “I believe they were looking to revitalize the property, you know?” He said. Enter his black bass, kicky Egusi stew, stuffed into dumplings and a riff of bodega-style chopped cheddar buns.

Mr Onwuachi (32), a resident of Manhattan’s Murray Hill, is perhaps most well-known for his appearance on “Top Chef” 2015 He has since opened many restaurants, with different degrees of success, and published a memoir that details his time as a drug dealer. The book is being made into a film. He said, “I got a small cameo.”

Kwame Onwuachi Hobbies
Kwame Onwuachi REPS We’ll then play basketball at St. Vartan Park just a few blocks away on 36th Street and First Avenue. We’ll be running drills together, as usual with Nana, my writer friend. We’ll also do bench presses downstairs in my small apartment gym. I don’t know how much, but you can see the day. It’s not a bad day if you have two hundred. As long as I do my reps, it’s not a bad thing.
VIBE OUT I then vibe out at around 11 or 12 and listen to Steely Dan or Lil Baby. A shot of tequila is okay. I Caviar-ed the apartment with Clase Azul or Casamigos. Although I don’t eat breakfast often, I will sometimes order Jamaican oxtails or curry goats from Jerk Pan Jamaican Food Truck at Midtown to keep me going throughout the day. This way, I don’t have the hassle of making dishes. I’ll then figure out the vibes.
TATIANA I might have to go to work in the kitchen. If I need to get to work on stew dumplings or any other menu ideas, it will be right now. We’ll eventually have to make cheesecake. Kwame Onwuachi will make that Nespresso super strong. The purple one. The purple drink. It’s amazing to have a Lincoln Center restaurant and be able to call it Tatiana after my sister who lives in the Bronx.
Murray Hill
THE PLACE I was somewhat forced to move into Murray Hill after moving back from L.A. several months ago. Although I would have liked to be closer to the restaurant, it seemed that many apartments were at 100% occupancy. This industrial robot vacuum is roaming around my new building. It sounds like a power drill. The entire tower is cleaned every three days. You could tape a stuffed animal to the tower or use googly eyes.
WEEK AT a GLANCE Paz can also come over. He is my C.O.O. He’s my C.O.O. We met while we were both studying at the Culinary Institute of America. He opened all four restaurants together and keeps the entire structure intact. Next week, for example, we will be hosting one of the NYC Wine & Food Festival dinners in Bryant Park. Paz does most of the planning, and I simply bring the food.
The film “Chopped”
CAMERA READY I am more than a person who likes to eat at restaurants. Since moving back to the city, every time I have a shoot or an event — such as now when I’m about the film “Chopped”, I’ll walk down to Dover Street Market to find a shirt. This store is amazing. It feels like each floor was designed by a different designer. I bought this Comme des Garcons shirt in black and white with raised textures from there just before Drew Barrymore invited me to her show a few months ago.
BUBBLING I was contacted by friends in the middle of the day. I don’t plan. Everything just happens. Fish Cheeks is a Thai restaurant in NoHo. We eat there often before we know what the word means. The steamed bass will be our choice. This dish is made with ginger, lime, and chilli broth. It’s bubbling. It’s lit with little candles beneath and bubbling at the table.
TOASTED We may then go to Las’ Lap on the Lower East Side, just as we did two Sundays back. Kwame Onwuachi Toasting, sharing stories about our lives. We work together as a couple with some of my friends. Another friend of mine is an actor so we can run lines together.
Goals
GOALS I would love to be an actor. I have acted in films. I’ll just mention one movie. P.S. used to have played. 153 and M.S. 181 in the Bronx when I was a child. Younger days. However, one of my major goals is to be more active.
NIGHT OWL We might go to a party like the one Drake hosted at Zero Bond three Sundays ago for the New York premiere. This party was simple: You entered, were given a $500 token, and then you could muddle around playing blackjack or winning prizes. It was a bit like an adult arcade, with tokens and all that. You can return home at 2:3 a.m. to eat Fritos Flavor Twists. Or spicy purple-bag Doritos. Although it’s easy to fall asleep, I love staying up until the early hours.
