Les Schwab Tire Centers of Portland, Inc Company Overview

Les Schwab Tire Centers

When Les Schwab bought OK Rubber Welders in 1952, he started the company with a single location in Prineville, Oregon. In 2008, the corporate offices were relocated from Prineville to Bend. From 1964 until 2011, the company used a “Free-Beef” February promotion to promote sales during the dull late-winter months.

In 2006, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit against the corporation, alleging gender-based job discrimination.

According to the EEOC lawsuit, the corporation refused women senior management positions, despite the fact that there was only one female assistant store manager at the time of the filing.

Former employees sued them in a class action complaint filed the same year, alleging the same things. In 2010, the federal case was settled. Dick Borgman was named CEO of the corporation on December 12, 2006. Forbes listed the corporation as the 318th largest private company that year.

The network has over 410 locations in Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington as of 2007.

The company is the second-largest independent tire retailer in the United States, with annual sales exceeding $1.6 billion.

Founder Les Schwab died in May 2007, leaving the company in the Schwab family’s hands, and then-chairman Phil Wick killed in 2010.

In October 2012, Les Schwab Tires opened five outlets in the Denver metropolitan area, the first in Colorado, increasing company-owned stores to 374.

CEO Jack Cuniff stated in September 2020 that the company would be sold to a San Francisco investment fund.

On Sundays, the company shutters all of its stores, and personnel are noted for sprinting to customer cars as they pull up to a parking spot.
