What Wynonna and Ashley said about their mother’s passing, and what they didn’t

“We have shared openly the joys and sorrows of being family, as well as our joys. Judd’s family includes Naomi Judd and Larry Strickland. “Our matriarch was persecuted,” said Judd. “The toxicology reports and autopsy reports were as expected. She was diagnosed with PTSD and bipolar disorder. Millions of Americans can identify with her. This devastation continues to affect us. As her widower and children mourn, we appreciate your privacy.

Ashley Judd, Judd’s child, previously spoke out about her mother’s passing in an interview she did with Diane Sawyer on ABC’s Good Morning America. This interview aired May 12.

Autopsy confirmed Ashley Judd’s claim that Naomi used a gun.

She said, “That’s the information we are uncomfortable sharing. But, we understand that — if it’s not said, someone else will.”

She also stated that she visited her mother that day, and that she was the one who “discovered” her.

“Sister and Pop appointed me in certain ways to speak for the family at this early stage before details about April 30th become public (‘a piece of the gossip economy’). We cannot control these details, whether it be the autopsy or the manner of her death. She told Sawyer that this is what prompted her to do it, because otherwise, it was too soon.”

Family Requests ‘Respectful Privacy’

Honor my mother Naomi Judd and her legacy by making motherhood safe, healthy, and enjoyable

Wynonna (58) and Ashley (54) have spoken out about their grief process in the wake of their mother’s passing and wished that the public would allow them to heal.

The Judd family had filed a petition in court to stop the release of documents relating to Naomi Judd’s death earlier in August. Strickland and her two daughters filed the petition in Williamson County Chancery Court. According to the petition, records from the investigation included audio and video interviews that were conducted right after Judd’s passing. These recordings could cause “significant trauma” and “irreparable harm” if released.

The family requested that all investigative materials, including audio and video records, be kept secret.

According to the petition, multiple media outlets, including Tennessean, part the USA TODAY Network submitted records requests for documents created during the investigation. This included toxicology reports and autopsy reports.

The lawsuit states that toxicological and autopsy reports can be exempted from privacy requests by the family because they are public records under Tennessee open records laws.

After filing their petition, the family released a statement calling the death of Naomi Judd “the most shocking day in our lives.”

“Our loved mother and wife died from mental illness.” Our family tried to grieve together with the community and, most importantly, with the privacy that every family member who has lost a loved one deserves.
