It turns out they went to high school together and were excellent friends, according to “The O.C.” star.
“We were both members of the same crew. “Senior year, we did ‘The Crucible’ together,” Bilson said on Dax Shepard’s podcast, “Armchair Expert.” “Like all of these endeavors, we were the leads in it together. We kept in touch a little bit after that.”
Malek, she claimed, has “I’ve always been gifted. Even in high school, he was a fantastic performer.”
He’s now well-known thanks to his parts in the show “Mr. Robot” and his Oscar-winning performance as Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” So Bilson decided it would be fun to post a throwback photo of the two of them on their senior trip to Broadway in New York City on social media.
“We were super-nerdy,” she said, “simply the dorkiest photo of both of us.” “But I toss it up because it’s amusing, and I believe it’s crucial to be able to laugh at yourself. And he’s wearing a gold chain, which makes me wonder, ‘Rami, where did you obtain that gold chain?'”
Bilson admitted that she rarely reads her Instagram direct messages, but she did see one from Malek a week later.

She claimed she removed the photo and wrote a note to her former high school pal wishing him luck at the Oscars.
“However, I was devastated because he was always so pleasant, and we were excellent friends,” she explained. “I’m a big believer in not taking oneself too seriously, especially when you’re that famous and talented. But, see, he wants to be revered, and that’s his thing, so I respected it.”
