At Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina, a 7-year-old girl was attacked by a shark
Mayor Debbie Smith told The Washington Post that it’s unknown if the girl’s mother and father were also in the water with her at the time.
“I heard she was extremely brave,” Smith added of the injured child, who was transported to a hospital and given a few stitches before being released.
Smith, who was at the beach on Sunday, said she learned about the event from an incoming dispatch call.
Smith added, “It was a really busy day at the beach,” adding that she was about a half-mile away from the incident.
The sort of shark that bit the girl is unknown, but Smith believes it was a “small” variety based on the size of the bite wound.
She couldn’t remember the last time she saw a shark attack on the beach, although it had been three or four years.
“When you’re at the beach, you should always be cautious and use common sense,” Smith advised. “However, this is a rare occurrence.”

No more shark sightings were reported on Sunday, and no swimming advisories have been issued this week, according to Smith.
When the girl was bitten, witnesses told WRAL that other beachgoers were warned to get out of the water near Concord Road.
This was at least the second recorded shark attack in the US in as many days.
A surfer was taken to the hospital on Saturday when a great white shark bit his right leg at Grey Whale Cove State Beach, about 20 miles south of San Francisco. Following the event, the beach was closed.
According to its website, Ocean Isle Beach has a population of about 600 residents and receives up to 25,000 tourists weekly during the summer months.
The town is around 45 miles southwest of Wilmington, but not far from the state boundary in South Carolina.
According to the Raleigh News & Observer, the last suspected shark attack on Ocean Isle Beach occurred in 2019, when a man was bitten by a “marine” animal.
According to the newspaper, three shark attacks occurred in North Carolina last year, making it the fourth-highest number in the US.
There were no fatalities in any of the recorded occurrences.
