McRib, which consists of seasoned boneless pork, barbecue sauce, onions, and pickles on a hoagie-style bun, debuted regionally in Kansas City in 1981 before going nationwide the following year.

In a statement, McDonald’s senior archives manager Mike Bullington claimed the sandwich was created to be “enjoyed during the colder seasons.”

McRib from McDonald’s is back! As the sandwich makes its celebrated and often contentious return to the McDonald’s menu, fans scream these words every year.

Many people are eagerly anticipating the return of the McRib, but how much do they know about their favourite fast-food sandwich?

The more you learn about the ingredients in the sandwich and what goes into bringing it to you, the less appealing it gets. I hope I didn’t ruin your appetite, but if I did, don’t blame me.

1. Nutrition Facts on McRibs Make You Want a McSalad

The nutritional information is simply terrifying. According to McDonald’s website, the sandwich not only has 500 calories—which means it contains 1/4 of your daily calories if you follow a regular 2000-calorie diet—but it also has 240 calories from fat. Sure, you knew it wasn’t good for you, but did you realize how horrible it was for you?

2. McRib Meat Isn’t What It Seems

Despite its moniker, McDonald’s admits that the sandwich is not prepared with rib meat. I’m not sure how this goes under misleading advertising and labelling, but they get away with it.

The sandwich, according to McDonald’s, is mainly made up of shoulder meat. The truth, as it turns out, is far less appealing. According to Chicago Magazine, the ingredients are restructured meat parts, including heart, tripe, and scalded stomach.

Doesn’t the McHeart, McTripe, have the same ring to them? Unfortunately, none of their nicknames is more accurate than “the McRib.”

3. Yoga Mats and Shoes Contain Strange McRib Ingredients

Wait until you hear about the other components. If you thought tripe, scalded stomach, and heart sounded nasty, wait until you hear about the others.

There are around 70 different ingredients in the sandwich, one of which is particularly concerning. The chemical in question is azodicarbonamide, a food additive. McAzodicarbonamide is a more precise name for the sandwich as a result.

Azodicarbonamide is a flour bleaching agent found in gym mats, yoga mats, and shoe soles when not employed in McRib buns. Yum!

Azodicarbonamide is prohibited in Australia and Europe, and the Health and Safety Executive of England considers it a respiratory sensitizer that may contribute to asthma through occupational exposure. Ammonium sulphate and polysorbate 80 are also present in the sandwich.

4. Animal Cruelty is a Hidden Ingredient in McRibs.

Smithfield Foods is the source of the tripe, stomach, and heart meat for the sandwich. Smithfield Foods is the largest producer and processor of pork in the world. Unfortunately, they have many other questionable credentials, including a dreadful environmental and animal welfare track record.

The Humane Society of the United States has filed a lawsuit with the Securities and Exchange Commission, alleging that the organization made false statements about its environmental and animal welfare activities.

The charges include holding breeding sows in gestation boxes (which restricts movement for the rest of the animal’s life) and performing a tooth extraction, castration, and tail clipping without anaesthetics.

5. McRibs is available all year.

Finally, for those of you who aren’t put off by lousy nutrition data, disgusting ingredients, or horrible animal treatment and still exclaim, “Give me a McRib before they vanish from the McDonald’s menu!”

You wouldn’t have to worry about grabbing one before they’re all gone if you lived in Germany. This is because the sandwich is served all year in Germany, where it is much more popular than in the United States.
