Jose Pablo Cantillo (nicknamed “Joey” in high school was born in Marsh-field, Wisconsin, to Costa Rican parents Roberto Cantillo and Rita Bolaos.
He grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana, and was a four-year tennis player at Terre Haute South Vigo High School, where he led the Terre Haute South Braves to a State Runner-Up finish in 1996.
He earned a double major in marketing and finance from Indiana University Bloomington’s Kelley School of Business in 2003.
After completing several theatrical classes at IU, Cantillo chose to pursue an acting career in New York City.
He relocated to California in late 2003. Since the early 2000s, Cantillo has scored guest roles on popular television series after performing in Off-Broadway plays in New York.
He had recurring parts in The Walking Dead as Caesar Martinez and in two Neill Blomkamp films, Elysium (2013) and Chappie (2014). (2015).
In 2019, he starred as Detective Martinez in El Chicano, a “Latino superhero film.”
