Setting
Exandria is a fictitious universe developed by Matthew Mercer in 2012 for his personal Dungeons & Dragons campaign, which was then turned into the online series Critical Role in 2015. Synopsis
The first two episodes “will be an all-new story about the seven-member Vox Machina team at D&D Level 7 on their first ‘grown-up’ mission, which takes place before Critical Role’s inaugural RPG show,” according to the press release.
The series will then adapt the Briarwood arc from the original web series, “in which the Vox Machina crew avenges the villainous Lord and Lady Briarwood’s murder of the rulers of the town of Whitestone and most of their kids.” “Other iconic Vox Machina story arcs” will also be adapted for the series.

Kickstarter
On 4 March 2019, the cast of Critical Role announced a Kickstarter effort to gather funding for Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina Animated Special, a 22-minute animation.
The animated story was supposed to take place right before the streaming phase of the campaign began—roughly when the players reached level seven—during a period in the game when the members of Vox Machina were not altogether at the same time, according to canon.
The actors estimated that a single 22-minute animated short would cost $750,000, including various campaign prizes and fees associated with a crowdfunding campaign. The campaign was set at 45 days because no one knew how long it would take to raise funds.
However, within an hour of its introduction, Kickstarter had raised almost $1,000,000. All of the announced stretch goals had been unlocked by the conclusion of the first full day, bringing the total to more than $4.3 million.
Additional stretch goals were added after four 22-minute episodes were financed in the first 24 hours, turning the project into an animated series.
The pre-stream plot arc will be covered in the first two episodes. The arc of the Briarwood, also from the Vox Machina campaign, would be used in later episodes. Eight 22-minute episodes had been funded as of 18 March 2019.
Finally, on 4 April 2019, during the showing of episode 57 of campaign two, the final stated stretch goal of $8.8 million was met, bringing the animated series’ entire length to ten episodes. On 16 April, a “hidden” $10 million stretch goal of Willingham being filmed walking around a spooky house was met.
When the Kickstarter campaign ended on 19 April 2019, it had raised a total of $11,385,449 from 88,887 backers. When the campaign ended, it was one of the fastest-funded in Kickstarter history, and it was also the most-funded Kickstarter for TV and film projects.
Production
With the exception of Orion Acaba, the actors will reprise their individual Vox Machina roles. Jennifer Muro and others wrote the series, which was animated by Titmouse, Inc with character design by Phil Bourassa.
Amazon Prime Video announced in November 2019 that they had purchased the streaming rights to The Legend of Vox Machina and had commissioned 14 new episodes (two additional episodes for season 1 and the second season of 12 episodes).
Backers of the Kickstarter campaign were told that they would get access to the first season, according to a post on the campaign’s website. The project was set to launch in late 2020 but owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was started in June 2020 that the premiere would be postponed. It has been rescheduled for 4 February 2022.

Pre-release
Variety, the Los Angeles Times, and CNBC stated that the Kickstarter surpassed the previous record holder, Mystery Science Theater 3000, with the total support of over $11.3 million from over 88,000 backers. Variety emphasized this “In the spring of 2018, Critical Role began working on the project.
Following Hollywood’s rejection, CR decided to try his hand at bringing the concept to life via Kickstarter. Critical Role knew they had a large and active fanbase, but they weren’t prepared for the torrent of pledges that have flooded in. According to Willingham, 30,000-40,000 people generally watch Twitch live, with another 150,000 people watching on-demand.
In the first 24 hours, the programs on YouTube usually get over 250,000 views. Each episode has roughly 1 million views in total “. The Los Angeles Times reported that Kickstarter had triumphed “‘Mystery Science Theater 3000,’ which was revived by Netflix in 2017, and ‘Veronica Mars,’ which was made into a feature film.
Critical Role has grown into a tiny media empire, with over 500,000 weekly followers on YouTube, Twitch, and its own website, Critrole.com. The pals have turned their own characters into a top ten comic book on Comixology, sold out their live gigs, and drawn lines around the block at comic book signings. The Amazon arrangement followed a collaboration with Titmouse, an animation studio “.
Orion Acaba and his character will not appear in the animated series, according to Cori McCreery of WWAC. She penned, “The ability to change things that no longer fit the tale you want to tell is one of the most appealing aspects of adaptations.
The Critical Role crew had a falling out with the actor who played Tiberius, and the character was forced to leave the game early in the stream, posing a problem for adaptations like this and the planned cartoon.
So, while I’m not sure if the character will be written out of the comics before he leaves the game, I do know that he will not appear in the animated series, despite his presence in some of the adventures there. I wouldn’t mind if this adaption took a leaf from the medium it belongs to and gave everyone a retcon of the group’s past “.
