Scott Peterson Murdered his wife and son: After murdering his wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn son Scott Peterson became the focus of a media firestorm for years in the early 2000s.
A beautiful victim, a baby, a handsome suspect, and enough mystery and intrigue to partially influence Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl made the case horrible and interesting in the morbid sense that true crime aficionados dream about (as well as the movie adaptation, which starred Ben Affleck who bears an almost disturbingly doppelganger likeness to Peterson).
Today we are going to discuss about who is Scott Peterson and why he killed his wife and unborn baby. Follow fox24x7 to get daily updates.
Who is Scott Peterson & What did He Do?
On Christmas Eve 2002, Laci Peterson, Scott’s wife, who was 8 months pregnant, was reported missing. According to reports, Scott informed police that he went fishing and that Laci had left their Modesto, California, house when he returned.
Scott wasn’t precisely honest, shown little emotion, and didn’t ask as many questions as customary for a spouse of a missing person, according to investigators who spoke to CBS News. Laci was the subject of vigils, search efforts, and monetary rewards for information leading to her location.
At one vigil, Scott was captured on camera grinning and joking. The Associated Press reported that Scott tried to sell their house, sold Laci’s car, and converted the nursery into a storage space in the weeks before Laci vanished. Scott was reportedly in debt prior to Laci’s disappearance.
Amber Frey, a massage therapist, came forward in January 2003 and claimed she had been having an affair with Scott since he allegedly told her he was single in November 2002. Authorities discovered Laci and Laci and Scott’s unborn baby Conner’s dead in San Francisco Bay two days apart in April 2003.
Less than a week later, Scott was detained and charged with two counts of felony premeditated murder with special circumstances; the charges were made due to a California law that stipulates any fetus that dies in a homicide above the age of eight weeks is considered a second victim. Scott made a not-guilty plea.
Laci’s family sued Scott in civil court in September 2003 to stop him from making money off of his account of Laci’s murder. Laci’s mother Sharon Rocha sued Scott for their deaths in a separate $5 million case that was brought in December of that year.
know what Scott Peterson did to his wife
The cause of Laci Peterson’s death has never been established since, according to forensic pathologist Dr. Brian Peterson (who is not related to the couple), her remains were so badly decomposed when they were discovered.
Authorities asserted that Scott killed Laci in their home before dismembering and discarding her body parts in San Francisco Bay from his fishing boat along with a bag of cement.
Dr. Peterson hypothesized that Laci might have been suffocated or strangled to death, which would not have left forensic evidence. Conner’s birth after Laci’s murder and if the fetus died before leaving her body are still unanswered questions.
Has Scott Peterson received the death penalty?
Scott Peterson was given a death sentence in December 2004, but he was never executed, and he now won’t be. Peterson received a new life sentence without the possibility of parole in December 2021.
The California Supreme Court concluded in 2020, according to the Associated Press, that the jury in Peterson’s trial had not been adequately screened for bias against the death penalty.
In order to save Laci’s family the stress of yet another trial, prosecutors apparently decided against seeking the death penalty a second time.
When Scott Peterson will be released?
Peterson will spend the rest of his life in prison as things stand right now. But if he receives a fresh trial and is found not responsible for the deaths of Laci and their infant son Conner, he will be freed.
When the investigations into the misconduct of the jury are complete, which won’t be until late June 2022, he won’t know if he will receive a new trial.
