The previous skilled musician, whose extraordinary expertise propelled him to cartoon prominence, was honored by his fellow artists. In 1933, Roger was born in Portsmouth. The Diocese of Los Angeles lost millions due to Mahony’s handling of cases of sexual abuse. Court filings in recent years have shown that Mahony failed to do enough to protect children and their families from abusive priests. The Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that Mahony and his former-vicar of clergy conspired against law enforcement to conceal the sexual abuse.
Jose Gomez, the Los Angeles Archbishop, barred Mahony’s public ministry in response to these allegations. He cited his failure to protect youth against sexually abusive priests. Cardinal Mahony served on several USCCB committees including the councils for pastoral care of migrants, itinerants, as well as the council for administrative and economic concerns.
