Indian politics is mourning the passing of Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi aka A M Ahmadi, the 26th Chief Justice of India who passed away at 90 years old.

It’s heartbreaking to know that his former CJI has left this world, leaving behind his family and colleagues devastated.

Survived by children Huzefa Ahmadi and Tasneem Ahmadi both prominent lawyers, A M Ahmadi’s sudden passing left everyone in shockwaves. According to reports, A M Ahmadi took his last breath on Thursday March 2, 2023 due to age-related ailments.

Mehmood Pracha, a lawyer in South Delhi, reported the passing of Justice A. M. Ahmadi at a private hospital on November 28. Congress Party Member Aslam Shaikh expressed his sadness to learn of his passing: “Judge A. M. Ahmadi was an eminent jurist whose legacy will continue to inspire generations; our hearts go out to his family and friends – #JusticeAMAhmadi”.

Justice Ahmadi had served as judge at Supreme Court from December 1998 before being elevated to Chief Justice from 1994 – 1997. For more details on his tenures here, read on!

AM Ahmadi Death Cause

Born Aziz Mushabar Ahmadi on March 25, 1932 in Surat, Bombay Presidency British India, he rose to become the 26th Chief Justice of India and judge on City Civil & Sessions Court of Ahmedabad from 1964. Later appointed secretary for legal affairs by Gujarat state government which eventually led him to serve on Gujarat High Court as judge.

Ahmadi also served as chairman of several advisory boards, such as Conservative of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities; Prevention of Black Marketing; and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities.

Furthermore, he was a member of the Ravi & Beas Water Dispute Tribunal under Rajiv-Longowal Settlement. Upon leaving his position as justice of the supreme court, Ahmadi became chancellor at Aligarh Muslim University; three years later he was re-elected for another three year term.

Mallikarjun Kharge took to his social media and expressed his condolences: “Our heartfelt condolences on the passing away of Former CJI Justice A. M. Ahmadi.

At the Supreme Court, he authored 232 judgements and served on 811 benches during his tenure as Academic Dean at AMU. We will all remember Justice Ahmadi for his remarkable contributions in our nation’s history”.
