Ana Mercedes Hoyos was born September 29th 1942 in Bogota Colombia to Ester Mejia Gutierrez and Manuel Jose Hoyos Toro. Her father was an architectural engineer who encouraged Ana in her studies of art history. Ana attended Colegio Marymount in Bogota for primary and secondary schooling before enrolling for private painting lessons with Luciano Jaramillo.

At the University of the Andes, she studied visual art under Juan Antonio Roda, Marta Traba and Armando Villegas; although she never completed her studies. In 1967 she married architect Jacques Mosseri Hane and spent a month exploring Pop Art exhibits before returning home to Bogota where Ana was born the same year.

Hoyos began her teaching career at the University of the Andes from 1961-1965 before beginning to exhibit in 1966 and winning second prize at Bogota’s Museum of Contemporary Art Young Painter Biennial that same year; additionally she took first place at Bogota Museum of Modern Art’s “Environmental Spaces” exhibition the following year.

At first, she produced Pop Art works; by the 1970s she had switched to creating minimalist and abstract works – leading her to launch Ventanas (Windows), considered among her most significant body of work.

At first she focused on cubism and realism while exploring light, color and sensuality within her surroundings. Through reinterpreting master painters such as Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso she soon moved towards Colombian multiculturalism which led to further works exploring Afro-Colombian and Mestizo heritage within Colombian landscapes.

Her most iconic works include still lifes with fruits and flowers, portraits of Palenqueras (fruit vendors from San Basilio de Palenque), paintings featuring macaws flying freely over Colombia’s Atlantic coastline beaches, as well as sculptures inspired by pre-Columbian art.

Over her 50-year artistic career, she earned over seventeen national and international awards of recognition. Her works can be seen in permanent collections such as those at Fuji Art Museum in Tokyo; Ibercaja Collection of Zaragoza Spain; Museum of Modern Art Mexico City and Nassau County Museum of Art Roslyn Harbor New York as well as museums across Latin America cities. Furthermore, her collection of San Basilio de Palenque archiveal materials was donated to United Nations University Tokyo as well as Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture respectively.

Hoyos died at the Santa Fe Foundation Clinic, after celebrating her half-century anniversary of artistic work the prior day, on September 5, 2014. Although the cause of her death remains unknown, Ana Mosseri reported to local media that Hoyos passed due to natural causes.

Maria Paz Gaviria, Director of Bogota International Art Fair said on Caracol Radio, that it is a tragic loss for Colombian art.
