Bruce Goldfarb, the assistant to the Maryland Department of Health’s chief medical examiner, confirmed to TODAY on Wednesday that the celebrity chef died in his sleep last month after succumbing to the disease, which occurs when fats, cholesterol, and other substances build up and harden in the arteries, restricting blood flow. Ruiz, who was from the New York City area, died while visiting friends in Maryland.

Ruiz was a famous guest judge on numerous Food Network cooking competition shows, including Guy Fieri’s “Guy’s Grocery Games” and “Guy’s Ranch Kitchen,” where he died at 44. In 2013, his deli, Marie’s Italian Specialties in New Jersey, was featured on Fieri’s hit show “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” giving him his first major break in front of the camera.
He also owns the New York eatery La Cubana and hosts the “Omg Carl’s Food Show,” a popular YouTube series.

After learning of Ruiz’s death last month, several Food Network stars, including Fieri, flocked to Twitter to pay poignant respects.
Fieri commented next to a photo of Ruiz, “I’m heartbroken that my friend chef Carl Ruiz is gone.” “I don’t know how to express what a wonderful friend he was to my family and me. His culinary prowess only surpassed his capacity to make me laugh and grin in any situation.”
Fieri added in a separate tweet, “I’ve met a lot of terrific people over the years, but a friend like Carl is one in a million. Carl ‘The Cuban’ Ruiz will live on in my heart and the hearts of others who loved him for the rest of their lives.”
“This man was somehow fatherly, consoling, wise, wild, clever, wickedly humorous & unique all in one,” commented Alex Guarnaschelli, a New York-based restaurant owner and “Chopped” judge. “Without him, my life will be more lonely. Carl, I adore you. Without you here, I’ll make sure no one puts pineapple on pizza.”

La Cubana, Ruiz’s restaurant, had only recently opened in June. The Carl Ruiz Scholarship Foundation will be established, according to the restaurant’s Instagram account, to help financially support budding chefs.
