Following graduation from high school she moved to New York City to pursue acting and went on Broadway for Tom Stoppard’s Dirty Linen and New-Found-Land between January and March 1977 winning her the 1977 Theatre World Award.
Additionally she appeared on Broadway for The Heiress (1976) and Design for Living (1984) and as “Desdemona” replacement in Othello 3 March 1982 as replacement “Desdemona”.

She then made her TV debut as Stacey Erickson on Steven Bochco’s Paris police drama from 1979-801 alongside future husband James Earl Jones; it ran for 13 episodes over that timeframe. In 1980 she appeared as Norma Shearer in The Silent Lovers TV movie about Irving Thalberg and Norma Shearer’s relationship.

She co-starred alongside Paxton Whitehead in five plays before they made their final joint performance at Westport Country Playhouse’s Bedroom Farce production together in 2015.
Hart first married actor Bruce Weitz in 1971 before divorcing him in 1980 and marrying James Earl Jones (it was also his second marriage two years later; together they had one son named Flynn Earl Jones born 1982 and were together until Hart’s death.
Hart died on October 16, 2016, due to ovarian cancer at her Westport, Connecticut residence at age 68.
