Thomas was born December 25, 1987 in Montrose, Georgia. As a child, authorities raided the home of Thomas’ grandmother and mother. His grandmother was sentenced to life imprisonment and his mother to 20 years for crack cocaine distribution.
Thomas described as an introverted and quiet youngster. He raised by his aunt and uncle while his mother was in prison. As a youngster, his uncle gave Thomas the nickname “Bay Bay”, a reference to the naughty children in the film Bebe’s Kids. On July 13, 2015, President Barack Obama reduced the sentence of his mother.

Thomas injured in his foot and could not participate in the combine workouts. He was second among wide receivers to receive the highest Wonderlic exam score, 34, behind Eric Decker (a friend and fellow wide receiver who will be his future teammate), who received 43.
The Denver Broncos selected Thomas 22nd overall in the first round 2010 NFL Draft. He the first wide receiver to be selected that year. On July 31, 2010, the Broncos signed him up to a $5.155 million contract with a $9.35million guarantee.
Thomas tore his achilles tendon while working out on February 10, 2011, and anticipated to miss the bulk, if not the whole, 2011 season.
