Duane Reade, New York City’s biggest drugstore chain has grown to 253 locations since its 1960 founding. It is a New York institution.
However, the management of the chain believes that a remodel is necessary. According to corporate thinking, stores are often cramped and dim, stuffed into awkward layouts, and overflowing with everything. (Would you like some Tostitos with that ointment?) ).
This is in addition to the new campaign “Your city.” Duane Reade is redesigning some of its drugstores. Following other retailers’ design principles, the new Duane Reade are lighter and airier, with wider aisles and radically redesigned pharmacies.
John Lederer, chief executive of Duane Reade, stated that “the old idea in retail was what amount could we pack in and how high we could stack it.”
One outlet at 200 Water Street is already being renovated by the company. Another at 460 Eighth Avenue is at 34th Street. The company hopes to remodel more than 100 stores by 2011. It’s unclear whether New Yorkers will cheer on the changes, but Joe Jackman is the acting chief marketing officer of the chain.
