Fowler confirmed that Perry died from natural causes on 1/12,Thursday, at 5 a.m. at his home in Gaffney. Robert D. Manfred, Major League Baseball commissioner, said that Gaylord Perry was “a consistent workhorse” and a notable figure in his Hall of Fame career. He made this statement in a Thursday statement. “He will be remembered as one of the most successful San Francisco Giants, and through his time with San Diego and Cleveland, he was the first pitcher to win both the American League and National League Cy Young Award.

Who Was Gaylord Perry?

Gaylord Jackson Perry, an American professional baseball pitcher, was born in Williamston, North Carolina, on September 15, 1938. Gaylord Perry had a 22-year career in the majors, which he started in 1962 for the San Francisco Giants. In total, he played for eight teams. His career stats include 314 wins, 265 losses, and a 3.11 ERA.

He was a two-time Cy Young award winner, and he is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. In addition to his career as a player, Perry also served as a coach. He was a baseball coach at Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina, from 1976 to 1991, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991.  He was a football and basketball star at Williamston High School.

Perry went to Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., and played baseball there with his brother, Jim Perry. He was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 1975. After he finished his playing career, he became a sales manager for Fiesta Foods. In late 1986, he filed for bankruptcy.

Perry was elected to the Hall of Fame with a vote of 77.2% in 1991. He was also awarded two Cy Young Awards. He won the first Cy Young award in 1972, when he pitched with the Cleveland Indians. The second was in 1978, when he pitched in San Diego Padres. Perry retired from professional baseball and began coaching. Perry founded Limestone College’s baseball program in Gaffney, and was a coach for the first three seasons.

He was survived by his wife Blanche, his son Jack, and three daughters.
