Early Life Of Jenni

Rivera was born in Long Beach, California on July 2, 1969 to Mexican parents Rosa Saavedra (and Pedro Rivera). Rivera, Rivera’s sister, and her four brothers were raised in a musical, close-knit family. Her brother Lupillo, a regional Mexican musician, was also raised.

Rivera was fluent in Spanish and English. She was exposed to traditional Mexican music by her family, including banda, nortea and ranchera. Rivera received consecutive A’s from her first year to her second year. At the age of 15, Rivera fell pregnant with Janney “Chiquis”, Marn-Rivera.

Rivera supported them both by selling CDs at flea market while she attended a continuation school to earn her GED. She also finished as class valedictorian. Rivera shared her 2003 experiences as a teenage mother. This was what I believed I needed to do. However, my counselors told me that they wouldn’t allow me to drop out. I had made too many promises.

After graduating from Long Beach City College, she earned a business administration degree and then worked in real estate. She later joined her father’s record company. Her father, an entrepreneur and bartender, founded Cintas Acuario Records in 1987. This record company launched the career of Chalino Sanchez, a Mexican singer/songwriter.
