Joe Picket Tv Series Cancelled
Box charmed his audience as usual with stories about his journey to writing and book tours. He and Neil Nyren (executive vice president, associate editor, and editor-in-chief of G.P. Putnam’s Sons. The panel discussed the relationship between writer and editor.
Box shared one of the interesting tidbits during Sleuthfest: that there was a TV series based on Joe Pickett (Wyoming game warden). Many people were excited about Joe Pickett and the novel’s supporting characters being the basis for a TV series. Box’s series is perfect for film.
The stories are engaging and the characters are relatable. The scenery is stunning, with the wide open spaces and wildlife of Wyoming as well as blue skies. Just a few weeks ago, Box posted via Facebook that the Joe Pickett TV Series was ending.
“There won’t be a Joe Pickett TV series. Box stated that the producers responsible for developing and placing the series have been withdrawn from the project. “Why? “Why?” We weren’t happy with the direction they were taking.
It is vital that any Joe Pickett series ever produced and broadcast maintains the characters, story lines and sequences, themes, locations, and narrative integrity. It won’t work to name actors “Joe Pickett”, “Marybeth”, or “Nate Romanowski” and create new motivations and personalities for them in a fake-Wyoming setting.
“If there’s ever a Joe Pickett TV series, we owe it our readers and ourselves to produce a quality product that is based on the world of the books and not shaped by the preferences of the producers or the brand.
He said that he wanted to be proud of what the final product looks like. Chuck Box, you are a great guy! All of us have seen beloved characters in mystery become weak shadows in TV or film.
Box Office Of Joe Picket
Although I love to see mystery books make it to the big screen, I’m also happy to hear that Box believed the integrity of his novels crucial. Films are nice, but books are much more important to me. Box seems to agree, adding that “a television series (or movie), is not the end-all and be-all of a novelist.”
Box said, “What is it that makes a difference?” Book by book, Joe Pickett meets the needs of passionate and committed readers. We won’t let you down. We can wait until we are certain it will be done right.
Box’s decision was also supported by readers. He told Mystery Scene in an email that he was “very pleasantly surprised” at how supportive readers were regarding the decision. He was not only online, but also in person on the Off the Grid tour.
The offending of books and characters by Hollywood is a topic that readers are very critical of. Authors who allow this to happen have strong opinions. Joe Pickett would make a great TV series. Netflix has done justice Longmire, which is based on Craig Johnston’s Walt Longmire novels.
The very good Amazon Prime series Bosch gives Harry Bosch, Michael Connelly’s character, a second life. Joe Pickett’s appearance, if it does ever happen, will well worth the wait.
