John Earl Madden, also known as John Madden, was born in Austin on 10 April 1936. His parents were Earl Russell Madden (born to Mary Margaret Madden) and he was raised in Austin. His father was a mechanic, and his family had moved to California as Madden was a young child.
He attended Catholic Parochial School to complete his education. In 1954, he graduated from Jefferson High School. Although he had always wanted to play football, he was destined to coach football teams.
When it comes to his personal life, he married Virginia Fields and had two children from that marriage, Joseph and Michael. According to legend, the couple met in a California bar.
