What Was Written in Emails By Jon Gruden?
Prior to being recruited by the Raiders for his second term with the team, the Times alleges that Gruden used racial, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic language in the emails. The communications are dated from 2010 to 2018, according to the Times.
He frequently referred to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell as a “f—t” and a “clueless anti-football p—y,” according to the Times. Additionally, he referred to NFL owners, coaches, and reporters who cover the league with homophobic epithets.
According to reports, Gruden also sent emails to Allen and others that contained images of women wearing nothing but bikini bottoms. Two cheerleaders for the Washington Football Team are reportedly in one picture.
According to the Times, Gruden and Allen occasionally sent emails to Ed Droste, a co-founder of Hooters, Jim McVay, a manager who oversaw the Outback Bowl, and Nick Reader, the creator of PDQ Restaurants.
Jon Gruden’s Remarks Following The Disclosure Of Emails
Gruden revealed to ESPN on Friday that the NFLPA executive director wasn’t the only person he insulted in 2011 amid labor negotiations that resulted in a lockout, presumably in an effort to soften the remarks he made about Smith.
He said that he also degraded Goodell: He admitted to calling Roger Goodell a “expletive” in one of these emails back in 2011 when he was “in a poor state of mind. “With a lockout, they were preventing athletes and coaches from doing what they loved.
The safety of the sport, which I adore, was the subject of numerous public reports as well. When I was working with high school football (in the Tampa, Florida, region) at the time, many parents were hesitant to let their children play the sport.
I couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable.” In a second interview with The Athletic, Gruden claimed he couldn’t recall the specifics of the email he sent to Allen and that he refers to liars as having “rubber lips,” which could account for his remark about Smith’s lips.
He continued by stating that although he is not racist, his remarks were inappropriate and that he would bear responsibility for them.
Raiders and NFL’s Responses to The Emails From Gruden
“The material in a worrisome email sent by Jon Gruden to DeMaurice Smith 10 years ago while he was an ESPN employee is not emblematic of what the Raiders stand for. A reporter first brought the email to our attention late yesterday, and we are now examining it with additional materials provided by the NFL today. We’re now discussing it with Coach Gruden, so we won’t say anything else.”
