It is hard to imagine someone who committed Murder On My Mind Lyrics would release a song confessing their crime, yet in the case of YNW Melly, fans are wondering if he did just that.
Last month, Melly’s hit song “Murder on My Mind” went gold, selling half a million units – and this past Wednesday the 19-year-old turned himself into Miramar Police on two counts of first-degree murder for the October deaths of his friends Anthony Williams (21), and Christopher Thomas Jr (19).
Melly, born Jamell Demons, is accused of shooting his friends multiple times and staging a crime scene to look like a drive-by shooting. He enlisted the help of another friend, Cortlen Henry (AKA YNW Bortlen), to set up the scene and transport the victims to the hospital, where they eventually succumbed to their wounds.
This incident conjures a haunting image: two grisly deaths shrouded in mystery, seemingly the result of senseless violence but upon closer inspection, it seems more sinister.
Melly’s “Murder On My Mind Lyrics” conveys a similar sense of tragedy. His melodic, monotonous flow over heavy 808s tells an intense story of murder, particularly in the second verse.
“Yellow tape around his body – it’s a horrific homicide/His face is on a T-shirt and his family has been traumatized/I didn’t intend to shoot him, he just caught me by surprise/I reloaded my pistol, cocked it back, and shot him twice,” the track begins.
Melly sings the poignant details of a victim’s last moments as she weaves them together into an exquisite melody:
“His body fell to the floor with teardrops in his eyes. He grabbed me by my hands and said he was afraid to die./I told ’em it’s too late, my friend; it’s time for goodbye/And he died inside of me with blood all over my shirt.”
The verse is immediately followed by the song’s hook, filled with references to various weapons
“When I wake up in the morning, murder is on my mind/AK-47s, MAC-11s, Glocks and 9’s,” the singer sings.
It remains unknown what type of gun was used to shoot Williams and Thomas Jr., better known among friends as “YNW Sakchaser” and “YNW Juvy.”
The shocking video for “Murder On My Mind Lyrics” has amassed more than 88 million views since its release in August, with views surging after YNW Melly’s arrest Wednesday.
The visual begins with a chain-heavy Melly holding onto a man covered in blood and surrounded by yellow tape as two children stand beside a police officer for observation.
Melly appears multiple times in the video, bound by a straitjacket and sporting a large snake draped around his shoulders. Most of the time he is pointing guns toward the camera.

However, YNW Melly’s video and lyrics take on new significance following his arrest and the severity of the charges against him.
Texas rapper Tay-K is facing two unrelated murder charges. His hit song “The Race” went viral in 2017 after he cut off his ankle monitor and fled while awaiting trial for the first murder charge; during which time it is alleged he committed another homicide.
The video for “The Race” appears to show then-17-year-old standing next to a “wanted” poster of himself while singing lines such as “I ain’t beat that case, bitch I did the race” and “I woke up too moody / who gon’ die today?”
At the time of his arrest, YNW Melly was in the middle of a tour that was set to conclude at The Ground in Miami next Wednesday.
Before surrendering, he posted a statement on Instagram to express his love for both of his deceased friends and accuse the system of trying to frame him.
“I want you guys to know I sincerely love and appreciate every one of y’all,” he wrote. “A couple of months ago, my two brothers were taken away by violence and now the system is seeking justice – unfortunately there have been many rumors and lies being spread but no worries, God is with me and my brother @ynw.bortlen; remember it’s a family affair – loving @ynwsakchaser1 and 2ynwjuvy #freeus.”
He is being held without bond in Broward County.
