Early Life
Russell Dominic Peters was born on September 29th 1970 in Toronto and moved with his family when he was four. At that point, they relocated to Brampton where his older brother Clayton now serves as manager.
Peters attended Chinguacousy Secondary School from grades 9-10, and North Peel Secondary School in Bramalea for grades 11-12. Unfortunately, he often faced bullying because of his ethnicity at school.
Career
Peters began performing in Toronto, 1989 and has since gone on to tour several countries around the world. In 1992 he met American comedian George Carlin, one of his biggest influences who encouraged him to get onstage whenever and wherever possible.
Peters attributes his 2004 performance on Canadian TV comedy show Comedy Now!, which was uploaded onto YouTube and went viral, as the pivotal moment in his career.
In 2007, Peters became the first comedian to sell-out Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, selling more than 16,000 tickets over two days for one show.
Peters reported that these segments had been seen by the targeted cultural groups and received positive response. On his performance “Outsourced,” Peters referenced the video’s viral nature; when cheers erupted when he referenced earlier jokes, he exclaimed “Look at you, filthy downloaders!” In 2017, Peters made an appearance on Top Gear America’s third episode as one of the guests.
