Michael Oher was born May 28, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee to Denise Oher – an alcoholic and crack cocaine addict – and Michael Jerome Williams, whose father often served time in prison. His upbringing left him without much guidance or discipline throughout his childhood years, leading him to repeat both first and second grades and attend eleven different schools over the course of nine years as a student.
At age seven, Michael Oher was placed into foster care and lived between various foster homes and periods of homelessness. His biological father was a former cellmate of Denise Oher’s brother and tragically passed away while Oher was a senior in high school. Sean Tuohy and Leigh Anne Tuohy eventually adopted him when he was 16; they then became his legal guardians when he turned 17. To help with schoolwork each weekday evening, they hired a tutor.
High School
Oher began playing football during his freshman year at a public high school in Memphis. By junior year, the young star had made quite an impression and earned himself the distinction of Division II Lineman of the Year for 2003 as well as First Team Tennessee All-State recognition.
He earned two letters in track and basketball as a senior, becoming the starting left tackle on the varsity football team. Additionally, Oher finished as a state runner-up in the discus as a senior.
Oher’s low grades initially stood as a barrier to his acceptance into an NCAA program, but he eventually improved his 0.76 GPA to 2.52 in order to attend a Division 1 school. He achieved this by taking online classes from Brigham Young University, replacing any Ds or Fs earned in earlier classes with As until his GPA exceeded the required minimum.
He rapidly rose to become a top football prospect in Tennessee, earning multiple scholarships offers from Division 1 schools. Ultimately, he chose to play college football for the Ole Miss Rebels at the University of Mississippi after receiving scholarship offers from Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and South Carolina.
College Career
Oher made his college debut for the Ole Miss Rebels as a guard, starting in ten games as a guard. He quickly earned himself a place on the first-team freshman All-American list.
After shifting to left tackle for the 2006 season, Oher earned multiple preseason All-Conference and All-American honoree recognitions. His sophomore year saw him earn a spot on the second team of the Southeastern Conference offensive linemen; by junior year, he had earned himself a place on the first-team SEC offensive linemen.
Aher was an outstanding scholar at Ole Miss, with his tested IQ score increasing by 30 points between when he was measured growing up and college. In his sophomore year, Oher earned honor roll recognition.
However, in January 2008 he announced his departure for the NFL draft. Two days after declaring his withdrawal from the draft, Oher returned to Ole Miss for his senior year. At the end of 2008, Oher earned unanimous recognition as a first-team All-American and made both honors rolls twice during college.
After graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice in the spring of 2009, Oher left his college football career with over a dozen awards and prestigious honors for the sport.
Pro Career
Before he graduated, Oher was already being touted as one of the top prospects for the 2009 NFL Draft. The Baltimore Ravens selected Oher with the 23rd pick in the first round of that draft, solidifying him as one of their top targets. On July 30th, 2009, the Ravens acquired a draft pick from the New England Patriots in exchange for their first and fifth-round draft picks.
His adoptive family, the Tuohys, were present to witness his selection on draft day. On that same day, he signed a five-year, $13.8 million dollar contract with the Ravens. He began the 2009 season as a right tackle but was moved to left tackle after an injury to lineman Jared Gaither.
Eight weeks later, Oher returned to his original position of right tackle and began starting all games throughout 2009. In 2009, Oher alternated between both positions throughout each game. In his debut post-season game in January 2010 against the New England Patriots, Oher played right tackle and didn’t allow a single sack, helping the Ravens to an impressive 33-13 victory.
That performance earned him second place in voting for the Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award with six votes. Four months later in February 2013, Oher won his first Super Bowl ring after helping Baltimore defeat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 in Super Bowl XLVII.

One month later, Oher signed a two-year, $7 million dollar contract with the Carolina Panthers. He cited Cam Newton as an influential factor in his decision and ended up having one of his best seasons as a professional, protecting Newton’s blind side.
Starting left tackle heading into the season despite struggles in Tennessee, Panthers GM Dave Gettleman stated: “We did our homework on Michael and feel very strongly that he can be an answer for us. He’ll be inserted at left tackle, and we’ll take it from there.” In total, Oher played in 98.4% of snaps while being penalized only three times for 25 yards.
On February 7, 2016, Oher was part of the Panthers team that played in the Super Bowl, losing by a score of 24-10 to the Denver Broncos.
