April 24th Tiktok: From sunset lamps to TikTok yoga pants, new TikTok trends emerge on a regular basis.
While participating in these trends might be entertaining, not all of them are safe. Especially the most recent one, which is, to put it mildly, unnerving.
TikTok users cautioned their followers about a worrisome TikTok trend on April 24th, but what was it and how dangerous was it?
WHAT WAS THE TIKTOK TREND ON APRIL 24TH?
Some TikTok users said that a gang of six males had declared April 24th as “national sexual assault day” for committing rape and sexual assault.
And that they even provided suggestions on how to do it successfully. The “April24” hashtag received more than 25 million views when it first became viral.
Some TikTok users spread the message by deliberately alerting their followers (particularly women) about the trend, as they see the day as a potential threat to their safety.
“I really just saw a video on TikTok, and I had to post my own video because the majority of my followers are women,” one TikTok user cautioned.
“And I want to make sure you’re aware that there’s a video circulating on TikTok of despicable men—rapists, child molesters, predators, and just awful human beings—who literally planned a date to rape women and children. You read that correctly: women and children.”
Her video has been viewed over 1.5 million times, and she has advised people to not only share it and spread the news, but also to be cautious on that day because it may represent a threat to our safety.
“Stay inside, you guys. I know that occurs all the time, but they’ve set this date specifically for it. Carry what you’ve got because I don’t think you should. Stay cautious, and spread the word she went on.
Others have indicated that the movement is a joke, but have nonetheless cautioned followers to be cautious.
“There are a lot of people who appear to think it’s a joke, and a lot of others who are trying to say it’s very, very genuine,” another user added. “I think everyone should just attempt to stay at home out of an abundance of caution.”
WAS THE TIKTOK TREND ON APRIL 24TH EVER SERIOUS?
Despite the fact that the message has gone viral on TikTok, a spokeswoman for the platform told Newsweek that no evidence of these videos ever existed on the platform.
“We do not accept content that encourages or praises non-consensual sexual activities such as rape or sexual assault,” the representative stated.
“While we have not found any videos relating to this issue on our platform, our safety team remains alert, and we will remove any content that violates our policy.”
So far, there have been no reports of events occurring on April 24th as a result of the TikTok trend.
HOW TO BLOCK ANY TIKTOK VIDEOS THAT PROMOTE SEXUAL ASSAULT DAY OR ANY OTHER DANGEROUS VIDEOS
While it’s unclear whether the trend was real or a fake, it’s important to know what to do if you come across any potentially dangerous videos on TikTok.
Blocking videos may appear insignificant, but it has a significant influence. You can help halt the propagation of the damaging message to TikTok users by reporting any hashtags, videos, or people that advocate this behaviour.
If you happen to come across a video advocating this heinous act while scrolling through TikTok, users have described how to disable any videos that appear to be endorsing it.
Simply click the arrow at the bottom of the screen (right next to the comment button) and then select the “report” flag. You’ll be given a list of reasons for blocking the video after that. Simply select one of the choices that best fits your needs, and the video will be blocked.
