Druw Jones the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 MLB draft, had a season-ending shoulder injury during his first hitting practice with the Arizona Diamondbacks and will require surgery, according to farm director Josh Barfield, who was quoted by the Arizona Republic. On Wednesday, Jones will have an arthroscopic posterior labral repair.

Druw Jones Shoulder Injury
Jones’ surgery will require an 8-9 month rehabilitation period, which may sideline him until early next season. Last year’s first-round draft pick for Arizona, Jordan Lawlar, had a similar treatment in August and was able to play on Opening Day for the minor leagues this year.
Post-surgery, Lawlar has performed exceptionally well and is largely regarded as one of baseball’s top 25 to 30 prospects. Jones, the son of legendary All-Star outfielder Andruw Jones, was drafted out of Georgia’s Wesleyan High School and signed a reported $8,189,400 signing bonus.
R.J. Anderson, prior to the draft, ranked Jones as the most talented player available. Here is a portion of his Jones article: “In the spring, Jones, whose father Andruw is a borderline Hall of Famer, was in contention for the top place. He has since become the industry’s favorite option.
It is not difficult to comprehend why. He has the potential to conclude his development with five plus or superior tools, including both components of his bat, in a premium defensive position. Indeed, his project able body and hand speed should enable him to gain muscle and strength as he ages.
Druw Jones may lose a little bit of speed as a result, but he is believed to have the instincts and innate feel for the position that will allow him to maintain a rich secondary value in his game. There is genuine All-Star potential here, and he is deserving of the No. 1 choice, even if he goes No. 2 or No. 3.” Bar field noted that although this is an early setback for Jones and the Diamondbacks, the injury will not materially hinder his career.
