Kanswal was an instructor at the NIM in 2013. She had completed her search and rescue, mountaineering instructor, and advanced courses in 2013. Kanswal set a new national record by climbing Mount Makalu and Mount Everest in 16 days. In May, she was awarded the tricolour at the summit of Mount Makalu, the highest peak in the world. She climbed Mount Makalu on May 28, the fifth-highest peak in the world.
When the Dokrani Bamak glacier avalanche struck, the ace mountaineer was serving as an instructor at the institute’s advanced mountaineering program in Danda Peak.
Savita Kanswal, a woman mountaineer from India, successfully climbed Mount Lhotse (8516m), the fourth highest peak in the world, in 2021. This was under the Everest Massif expedition. Savita Kanswal is the second Indian woman mountaineer to lift the tricolor on Mount Lhotse.

Yesterday, a group of 41 mountaineers and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering instructors were trapped in an avalanche. 14 of them were rescued by the Indian Air Force, Army and Indian Tibetan Border Police, while the Joint Rescue Operation continues to search for survivors.
