Teen Wolf Season 7 had a devoted fan base, so when MTV abruptly cancelled the show, viewers were taken aback. Why was the show cancelled before the seventh season?
Here’s why Teen Wolf was cancelled rather than having a seventh season. Tyler Posey starred as Scott McCall in the MTV supernatural series, which was partially inspired on the 1985 film of the same name starring Michael J.
Fox and premiered in 2011. Set in the imaginary town of Beacon Hills, the show received mostly excellent reviews and a devoted fan base, which is why viewers were disappointed to learn that Teen Wolf season 6 would be the final season.
Teen Wolf had previously split its seasons, but in its last year, they took a new method. They divided the season into ten-episode arcs rather than telling a single tale throughout. Scott, Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O’Brien), Lydia Martin (Holland Roden), and Malia Tate (Shelley Hennig) — as well as the rest of the pack – returned to Beacon Hills for their final semester of high school until graduation in the first half.

What’s notable about Teen Wolf’s run is that when it was renewed for a sixth season with ten episodes in 2015, there was no announcement that it would be the series’ final season. MTV management and creator Jeff Davis allege that they opted to stop the show after six years because they think it had run its course.
Despite this, there was no sign that the show would be wrapping up anytime soon before the announcement. Season 6’s storytelling approach, with two narrative arcs in its last year, suggests that the show may have had to pack both stories into its final 20 episodes.
Teen Wolf was cancelled by MTV for a variety of reasons
Teen Wolf most likely ended because it was cancelled, owing to low ratings, according to the facts. Season 7 was never broadcast for a variety of reasons. MTV began to change its output to unscripted shows in 2016.
The cable network bought 11 unscripted series in April of that year, including a music competition from Mark Burnett, the producer of hit shows such as The Voice, Survivor, and Shark Tank.
It also approved reality competitions and several docuseries to capitalise on its rising popularity. MTV did take up a few scripted shows to balance things out, but unlike Teen Wolf, it’s evident that they were focusing more on their unscripted content.
Second, Teen Wolf’s ratings have been slowly declining since season 3, when it peaked with an average of 1.97 million viewers. Teen Wolf saw a minor reduction in audience share in season 4, with 1.61 million viewers, which was still sustainable, but by season 5, the series had dropped significantly, with only 1.07 million turning in on average.
By the final season, the ratings had plummeted to just over half a million viewers on average. It’s likely that the public had lost interest in Teen Wolf and where it was going, but the departure of various cast members over the years could also have played a role.
Tyler Hoechlin, Colton Hayes, and Arden Cho, who played Derek Hale, Jackson Whittemore, and Kira Yukimura, respectively, all quit their roles for various reasons. While filming Maze Runner:
The Death Cure, Teen Wolf had to work around O’Brien’s injuries, which forced them to utilise Stiles rarely in season 6. Many long-time fans were disappointed, since they had hoped that season 7 would see some Teen Wolf characters return, as well as more interaction between them (such as Stiles and Scott).
Teen Wolf Will Return In 2022
Teen Wolf’s cast met in 2020 to chat about their time on the show. Davis claimed that he was still asked questions regarding Season 7 years after it was (presumably) cancelled. While the writer was open to the idea, he did reveal that if a revival did happen, he would not be writing the storey. Fortunately for fans of the show, this turned out to be false.
The internet was buzzing in September 2021 with breaking news about an upcoming Teen Wolf sequel film. It is scheduled to be released in 2022. Davis will also write and executive produce the sequel, which will star “new allies” and “trusted pals” as they “fight back against what could be the most powerful and deadly opponent they’ve ever faced,” according to Deadline.
