During the show, the legendary director paid the actress a virtual visit in honour of her 46th birthday.
Before Spielberg arrived, Barrymore said that she had no idea what was going to happen next on the show, before Savannah Guthrie played a tape of a teenage Barrymore gushing over her “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” director in an interview.
The actress grew noticeably distraught as the clip aired, describing Spielberg as “the first person I knew” who “cared.”

When the director emerged and promised Drew, the tears started to pour “I still care about you, as I have always done.
During their conversation, Barrymore’s 1995 Playboy spread came up, and it was revealed that Spielberg, now 74, sent her a quilt that stated “cover up” after she posed for the magazine.
“Then I sent her the Playboy layout, and I had an artist come over and design paper doll cutout clothes,” he recounted, adding, “and I sent the whole thing back to Drew, now she’s clothed.”

Barrymore sent the director “an apology” in the shape of a series of photos of herself dressed as a nun, which he proudly displayed in front of the audience a week later.
“You always just motivated me to be my best,” Barrymore said, before adding, “You always just inspired me to be my best.”
“Then you grabbed both of my girls, Olive and Frankie. Olive was a tiny baby when she was born, and she fell asleep on your chest.
“And then you held Frankie and I’d come over to your house,” she said, “and I’m just so pleased to be a part of your life and I adore you and your amazing family.”
“You were my training wheels for fatherhood, Drew,” said Speilberg, a father of six.
“I wouldn’t be sitting here if it weren’t for you. At any time, “As she became tearful, Barrymore said. “I adore you and appreciate everything you’ve done for me.”
